Die Stadt Burlington
The City of Burlington is located in southern Ontario on the north shore of
Lake Ontario between Hamilton
and Toronto. It is a growing municipality with a population of approximately 156,900 located at the western
end of the Greater Toronto Area.
Geographical Features
Burlington has a total land area of 187 sq. km (73 sq. miles or 46,300 acres). The urban area is mainly
located south of the Parkway Belt and Hwy #407. The land north of this is used primarily for agricultural, rural
residential, and conservation purposes.
The Niagara Escarpment, Lake Ontario and the sloping plain between the escarpment and the lake make up the
land area. The city is no longer a port; sailing vessels in the area are used for recreational purposes and
moor at a small marina in LaSalle Park. Burlington also has recently twinned with Apeldoorn, Nethlands.
Climate
Burlington's climate is generally continental with warm humid summers and cold, dry winters. This is
moderated by the proximity of Lake Ontario, which tends to reduce temperature extremes. Monthly mean
temperatures range from 22 degrees centigrade (71 degrees F) in July to -5 degrees
centigrade (23 degrees F) in January. The annual precipitation consists of about 28 inches of rain
and 51 inches of snow. Easterly winds off the open waters of Lake Ontario may add substantially to local
snowfall however the prevailing winds are from the southwest.
The average date for a late frost is May 3rd, and the first autumn frost occurs about the 15th day of October.
"The Downtown Waterfront"
This initiative realizes a significant renewal of Burlington’s downtown waterfront park, a 15.7-acre
regional park. The park is uniquely located on Lake Ontario with direct connections to the
downtown, the Burlington Art Centre, Joseph Brant Museum and to the Burlington Beach. The park is
a source of pride for Burlington residents and is considered Burlington’s premier festival and event park.
An implementation plan to guide this work was developed through extensive collaboration between the
city, residents, and waterfront partners, and was approved in December 2003.
The renewed downtown waterfront includes the Brant Street pier with day docking for tour and recreations
boats, Discovery Landing, a new waterfront center and the Rotary Centennial Pond, a year-round water
feature and expanded walking, biking and recreational trails.

With the traditional type of beer "Stiegl" which comes from "Salzburg" a very famous town in Austria
